We proudly offer AIA courses for approved continuing education unit (CEU) credits.

Our courses are presented live via screenshare. Once the course is complete, we’ll submit authentication of your attendance to the AIA. Other certifications (CLD, IDCEC, IIDA, NCQLP) are self-reporting

Circadian-Lighting Versus Color-Tuning

credits: 1-hour for AIA Health, Safety, Welfare CEU
Benjamin

About the Course:

The term “human-centric lighting” has been controversial since it first appeared years ago. It begs the question, “Haven’t designers been striving to create beneficial human experiences before the term was coined?” With the emergence of new research and technology around lighting for circadian entrainment, “Are we expected to prescribe light as a doctor would prescribe medicine?” This course clarifies the misconceptions about light’s impact on human health and well-being. By examining the WELL Building Standard, research from the Lighting Research Center, philosophies of pioneering designers, and new lighting technology, attendees of this presentation will be poised to improve lives with light.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand why light entrains our circadian rhythm
  • Understand our visual biological interaction with light
  • Understand our psychological and cognitive interaction with light
  • Understand the work of the Lighting Research Center and WELL Building Institute
  • How to apply lighting for circadian entrainment and principles of biophilic design for health and wellbeing

Presenter:

Benjamin is a Co-Founder of LIGHTGLASS, student of biophilic design, and researcher of light’s impact on human biology and psychology, Ben works to further understand how we can apply light to improve people’s quality of life. As a lifelong musician, Benjamin greatly appreciates the converging creativity and design of architectural products and spaces, and is passionate about improving the human relationship with the built environment.

Light & Us: Human Evolution Under Light

George Bosson

About the Course:

During the course of human evolution, exposure to natural lighting conditions has conditioned neurological stimuli that regulate numerous biological functions. Circadian Rhythm, rooted in the Latin for “around the day”, is a term describing the entrained cyclical processes used to sustain most living organisms. The changing spectral distribution characteristics of the sun and the onset of night have been a key influence on how the retina has evolved to become a primary source of sensory stimulus effecting the production and inhibition of hormones essential to Circadian balance. Disruption of Circadian Rhythm (our natural cycles) can have deleterious effects on our health and wellbeing, particularly our patterns of sleep. Many of our built environments have created unnatural conditions for its occupants. Research has shown that poor illumination, of the spaces we occupy, can contribute to the disruption of our natural cycles. With the advent of Solid State Lighting (LED) and “nature emulating design” we can transform the environments that we occupy. This course explores ways of applying Circadian Balanced Illumination™, Biophilic Design, and WELL Building lighting principles to invigorate the human condition and benefit our cognition, health and wellbeing.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how natural light has contributed to the entrainment our circadian rhythm
  • Identify the visual and biological processing functions of the retina
  • Learn how light affects attentiveness and human sleep patterns
  • Learn how Circadian Balanced Illumination™, biophilic and WELL design improve the health and wellbeing of people in the built environment
